TechTip: Change the default font that Microsoft OneNote uses when sending emails through Outlook

Microsoft OneNote and Microsoft Outlook have been best buddies since the 2007 Office version, allowing you to create Tasks and messages back and forth between the two, take meeting minutes and email them to attendees with ease, and so on. However, there is one small annoyance, which took me a very long time to figure out, in the fact that OneNote changes the default font in the new Outlook email message that it generates when using the Share → Email Page feature to something none of the Office applications seem to be using.

All the usual places one would go to change the default fonts in both applications had the fonts of my choice selected (in my case Arial, size 10) and I even made sure that there default font in Microsoft Word (Normal.dot template) were also set to that, but to no avail - new email messages generated from OneNote continued to use Times New Roman, size 12. So, long story short, here is how you fix this:

  1. Open you Microsoft Word (yes, this setting is indeed in Word, but affects your Outlook which by default uses Word as the email editor) and click on File → Options:

  2. In the "Word Options" dialogue that opens, select "Advanced":

  3. Scroll down until the "General" section and click "Web Options":

  4. In the "Web Options" dialogue, go to the "Fonts" tab, make sure the language you are editing the fonts for is selected and update the fonts of your choice here:

This should do the trick - now when you are using the Share → Email Page feature or other means of generating a new email in Microsoft Outlook from Microsoft OneNote, it should be using the font settings you have selected in the step 4 above. As you can see from the screenshots, I was using Microsoft Office 2010 for this article, but I am fairly certain that the same steps (plus minus the old "ribbon" button) should work for the 2007 version as well. Enjoy!

OMG, thank you so much! That had been driving me absolutely crazy! (Thankfully, it seems to have also gotten rid of the extra space at the beginning of every message from OneNote...)
